Not open to students who have completed ANTH371 or HESP120. Ways of studying human language; basic concepts of modern linguistic analysis (sound systems, word formation, syntax, meaning). The nature of human language; the social aspects of language; language change; dialects; writing systems; language universals, etc. Basis for future work in linguistics. Lab Fee of $15.00.

The study of language as a cognitive phenomenon. Ways of representing people's knowledge of their native language, ways in which that knowledge is attained naturally by children, and how it is used in speaking and listening. Relevant philosophical literature. Relationship to study of other cognitive abilities: reasoning, perception, sensory-motor development.
