PHYS105
Physics for Decision Makers: Global Energy Crisis;
(3 credits)
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD.
CORE Physical Science (PS) Course.
This marquee course will consider the global energy crisis from a
scientific perspective. Topics include basic laws of energy and
thermodynamics, their effects on energy production and distribution,
greenhouse gas, global warming and policy options for decision makers.
This course is aimed at the non-science major.
In this marquee course, we will take a scientific perspective to study
with questions related to the global energy crisis: What is energy? What
are the basic laws of thermodynamics, and how do they constrain our
understanding of energy production? How is electricity produced and
distributed? What is a greenhouse gas? With an understanding of these
facts, we will then address more difficult questions. What options exist
for addressing global warming? This course will give tomorrow's decision
makers the basic tools needed to make informed, rational choices about
the world's future energy policy. The course is aimed at the non-science
major.
