BUMO Management and Organization ( The Robert H. Smith School of Business)

BUMO712 Leadership Development; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG.
Prerequisite: BUSI662. For BMGT majors only. Focuses on developing skills to inspire, influence and organize others to accomplish key goals. Building on leadership theories, course includes assessment & role-playing activities, discussions, cases, and exercises to assess and develop personal capabilities.

Any remaining seats in BUMO courses will be available to the following groups of students: Students admitted/graduates of UMCP master or PhD program and students admitted/graduates of an AACSB-accredited masters program. Students outside the department should contact the Smith School of Business Masters Program Office starting the first day of registration for specific instructions on how to request a BUMO course. Requests for courses will be reviewed approximately two weeks before the start of the semester. For all course sections with GS, class will be held at the Shady Grove Campus. For all course sections with DC, class will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building/International Trade Center. For all course sections with BA, class will be held at the UMAB School of Nursing.
For weekend courses, students are responsible for checking their schedule for course conflicts. If a student is registered for weekend courses that conflict, the student should make adjustments to their schedule. If changes are not made, the department can drop the course that was last added to cause the conflict.

BUMO714 Executive Power and Negotiation; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG.
Credit will be granted for only one of the following: BMGT 764 or BUMO 714. Formerly BMGT 764. Negotiations knowledge and skills through a series of readings (the use of power during bargaining exchanges, principles of effective listening, and bargaining strategies and tactics) and through the opportunity to practice negotiating. Non-majors should review their registration eligibility in the statement preceding the BUMO courses.

This course explores the skills, techniques, and strategies that are required to instill entrepreneurial behavior in large complex organizations. Students study presentations from real executives and business cases wherein creativity, innovation, fast descision-making, and trial and error implementation have been applied successfully. Prerequisite: completion of MBA core requirements or permission of department. Credit will be granted for only one of the following: BMGT 780 or BUMO 732. Formerly BMGT 780. Creating new ventures, including evaluating the entrepreneurial team, the opportunity and financing requirements. Skills, concepts, attitudes and know-how relevant for creating and building a venture; and preparation of a business plan. These approaches are not limited to new or growing enterprises. BUMO756 Industry and Competitor Analysis; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG.
Recommended: BUSI 690. Credit will be granted for only one of the following: BMGT 792 or BUMO 756. Formerly BMGT 792. This industry and competitor analysis seminar provides students with the conceptual framework and analytical tools for understanding the dynamics of industry structure and how competitors actually interact in the marketplace. An understanding of the dynamics of competition and industry evolution is an important input in the development of an effective competitive strategy.
