ITAL Italian( Arts and Humanities) ITAL103 Intensive Elementary Italian; (4 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD.Not open to students who have completed more than two years of high school Italian, or to fluent/native speakers of Italian. Credit will be granted for only one of the following: ITAL103 or ITAL121. Covers speaking, reading, writing, listening, and culture of Italian-speaking world. ITAL121 Accelerated Italian I; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD. Credit will be granted for only one of the following: ITAL103 or ITAL121. An intensive beginning course in Italian language skills: guided practice in reading, writing, understanding and conversation, to enable the student to move more quickly to advanced courses. Restricted to students already having a good background in at least one other foreign language. When taken with ITAL122, may be used to satisfy language requirement. Also offered as ITAL 121H. ITAL121H Accelerated Italian I; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD. Credit will be granted for only one of the following: ITAL103 or ITAL121. For general honors students only. Also offered as ITAL 121. ITAL203 Intensive Intermediate Italian; (4 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD. CORE Humanities (HO) Course. Prerequisite: ITAL103 or equivalent. An intensive review of major aspects of contemporary grammatical usage; training in comprehension; an introduction to guided composition. ITAL211 Intermediate Conversation; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD. Prerequisite: ITAL203 or permission of department. Not open to fluent/native speakers of Italian. Practice in spoken Italian with emphasis on contemporary Italian culture. ITAL261 Cuisine, Culture, and Society in Italy Yesterday and Today; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD. CORE Humanities (HO) Course. Prerequisite: ITAL204 or permission of department. This course will expose students to an important aspect of Italian culture. The art of gastronomy. Taught entirely in Italian, the course is intended to give students an in-depth understanding of the close relationship between food and culture, while enriching their knowledge of the Italian language through reading and analysis of various texts which deal with the preparation and adaptation of Italian food in different cultural settings. ITAL302 Introduction to Translation; (3 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD. Prerequisite: ITAL301 or permission of department. Translation exercises into English and Italian; problems and strategies.
