BUSI MBA Core and Cross-Functional ( The Robert H. Smith School of Business)


Any remaining seats in BUSI courses will be available to the following groups of students: Students admitted/graduates of UMCP master or PhD program and students admitted/graduates of an AACSB-accredited masters program. Students outside the department should contact the Smith School of Business Masters Program Office starting the first day of registration for specific instructions on how to request a BUSI course. Requests for courses will be reviewed approximately two weeks before the start of the semester. For all course sections with GS, class will be held at the Shady Grove Campus. For all course sections with DC, class will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building/International Trade Center. For all course sections with BA, class will be held at the UMAB School of Nursing.
For weekend courses, students are responsible for checking their schedule for course conflicts. If a student is registered for weekend courses that conflict, the student should make adjustments to their schedule. If changes are not made, the department can drop the course that was last added to cause the conflict.

BUSI604 Business Case Competition; (1 credit) Grade Method: REG.
For BMGT majors only. Not open to students who have completed BMGT 615. Credit will be granted for only one of the following: BMGT 604, BMGT 615 or BUSI 604. Formerly BMGT604. This competition integrates oral and written assignments and individual assessments culminating in a seven day competition. During this competition students will integrate elements from their various courses and demonstrate mastery of their communications skills. Teams are given a business case that deals with the broad strategy issues facing a company. The teams present their analyses and recommendations in written and oral presentations. In a multistage competition, teams will be selected to advance to the final round, which is judged by a panel of business leaders who play the role of the company's board of directors.

BUSI605 Culture, Ethics and Communication; (2 credits) Grade Method: REG.
Prerequisite: For majors only or permission of department. Provides an opportunity for student discussion, debate, and dramatization of topics relating to ethics, corporate social responsibility, and culture relevant to the current business environment. Such issues are brought to life through a project relating to corporate social responsibility, guest speakers, role-plays, and student-created dramatic performances.

Operations management is concerned with efficient and effective design and operation of business processes for delivering products and/or services. Emphasis is given to process analysis and design, capacity management and bottlenecks, waiting lines and the impact of uncertainty in process performance, quality management, lean, six-sigma, and revenue management.

Addresses project management skills that are required by successful managers in increasingly competitive and faster-moving environments. Skilled project managers are needed by organizations to reduce the current high rate of project failures and resultant loss of very large amounts of time and money. This course addresses fundamental concepts of successful project management, and the technical and managerial issues, methods, and techniques of project management, and of managing project managers.
