Prerequisites: BSCI105 and PSYC100. An introduction to the anatomical structures and physiological processes that determine behavior. After a study of the basic functioning of the nervous system, the course will examine the acquisition and processing of sensory information, the neural control of movement, and the biological bases of complex behaviors such as sleep, learning, memory, sex, language, and addiction. A laboratory course to introduce students to some of the basic physiological and anatomical techniques of contemporary neuroscience. Exercises look at specific neurons or groups of neurons and how they control such simple behaviors as swimming, prey capture, and species recognition. The lab exercises use living invertebrates and cold-blooded vertebrates.
